How To Remove or Add Security Tab In Properties Box In Windows 10

Security tab is visible in the Properties box of files, folders, applications, desktop shortcuts, etc. It is a very important tab using which you can change the ownership of the item, allow or restrict permissions for a user or group. So, in case you want to restrict a PC user from changing the ownership of a particular folder or file or modify/edit the permissions, you can simply remove this Security tab from the properties box of that file/folder/application. Later, when you think you should add the Security tab back to the properties box, you can do that too easily.

To make it convenient for you, I have added two different ways in this tutorial. I’m gonna use Registry Editor and Local Group Policy Editor. Before you proceed, it would be good to create system restore point. Although both the options are safe and you can undo changes anytime, still, creating a restore point is good, just in case.

Look at the image above. It is clearly visible that before Security tab was there, but after it is removed.

You can also do the same. Before we move further, make sure that you are signed in to Windows 10 with the administrator account.

Option 1: Remove or Add Security Tab In Properties box of A File or Folder Using Local Group Policy

Group Policy is available in Windows 10 Pro and other editions. Windows 10 Home users won’t be able to access this window because it is not available in that edition.

Step 1:  You can type gpedit.msc in the Run Command (Win+R) to open the Group Policy Editor window.

Step 2: Find the ‘File Explorer’ folder.

Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer.

Step 3: At the right side, you will see a lot of options available under File Explorer folder. You need to find “Remove Security tab“.

Step 4: Double click that option and a new window will open. Here, select Enabled, Press Apply and OK buttons.

select enabled option

This ensures that you have disabled or removed security tab from the Properties box. You can open any file/folder to check it.

Step 5: When you want to add/show the Security tab again, just follow step 1-4 and this time, select Disabled and save the changes. It will bring it back.

Option 2: Hide and Show Security Tab In The Properties Box of Any File or Folder In Windows 10 Using Registry

Windows 10 Home and other users can use Registry Editor to hide and show security tab. Steps are as follows:

Step 1: Open Registry and you need to find and delete{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}key from three different locations:

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers.
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers.
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers.

Delete this “{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}” key from all these three locations.

This is it! Security tab is now removed.

Step 2: To bring back the Security Tab, access all those three locations, and add the same “{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}” key back to those keys.

This will add the Security tab again in the Properties box.

Now you know how you can add or remove Security tab in Properties box in Windows 10, you can use this trick when you think is the right time to apply. Use any option you want and just carefully follow all the steps mentioned above to add the new tweak.
